What is a shell pearl?
The shell pearl is laboratory made from the shell of an oyster. The process of making a shell pearl involves several different stages. The basic material for the base of the pearl is the natural sea shell, which is coated and polished to the final shape of the pearl. In order to produce a good quality pearl, a key ingredient is what we call a 'mother of pearl bead'. This element adds weight, value and durability to the pearl. In fact, the materials used in order to make shell pearls are the same materials from which cultured pearls are made.
Pearl grading-
AAA : The highest-quality pearl, extremely rare quality with very high luster and only minor imperfections over less than 10% of its surface.
AA   : High luster. Surface may have some visible imperfections, but below 30% of its area.
A     : Good to medium luster with surface defects below 60% of the surface area.
B     : May have many slight defects, but no deep ones, spread over 60% of its surface; or deep defects over no more than 60% of its surface; or a combination of minor and deep defects over no more than 60% of its surface. Pearls below B grade are considered not acceptable for use in jewelry.
